About James Werner
James Werner received a Master of Fine Arts from the Kent Institute of Art and Design, UK, and a Doctorate of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University with a focus on New Media Art Theory and practice. He holds a dual placement at Cal Poly in the Art & Design Department and as the media arts, society and technology (MAST) professor in the STS program.
His research focuses on contemporary art practices in social media participation, telepresence in public space, and the evolution of the gallery and museum through new media collaborations. He also works closely with engineers and computer scientists on developing aesthetic engagements that encourage creativity in STEM education.
His research has been funded by many organizations including the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation for Research, and the Research Development Initiative in the UK. He has also been a grant recipient in the NSF I-Corps program, and has served as a panelist for NEA Fine Art grants. Recent publications involve research on collaborative aesthetics in museums and galleries, environmental art in the 21st century, and the aesthetics of gaming in engineering and science education.
Werner is a practicing artist. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. His artwork examines audience relationships with technology through sculpture, installation, and audience collaboration as a creative act. His next installation will be held at the SCANZ 2015 exhibition in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
